Our essential Ignition check list.

As the ignition system of any engine is one of the most important systems we have comprised a small but essential checklist for you to go through.

Remove the advance vacuum pipe from intake and check for positive vacuum when throttle is applied.
Check (if fitted) that the vacuum delay module is not blocked.
Check that positive vacuum will pull the distributor advance whilst also checking vacuum module is not holed (when sucking the pipe the base plate of the distributor should rotate anti-clockwise about 15 degrees).
Check that the rotor arm and distributor cap are genuine Land Rover Lucas, noticeable as they wild have "Lucas" in raised lettering on them.
Check the condition of the rotor arm for signs of damage or arcing, also check cap and clean contacts (better still fit new).
Check the rotor for free play, there should be none, both rotationally and side to side.
Check the rotor will turn clockwise through about 20 deg, and smartly retract back to its home position under good spring tension.
The standard distributor output is known to be weak so upgrading with our Power Amplifier is recommended.
Replace plug leads, preferably with Magnecor. Use good quality plugs such as NGK BP6ES, avoid fancy plugs as they don't normally last long also do not use resistor plugs as they do not allow full ignition output.
Check the TDC mark on the front pulley as we have found these to be up to 20 degrees out in worst circumstances.
With our ignition upgrades open the plug gap up to 0.8 - 0.9mm
If you are unsure of the age, condition or make of you coil replace with a standard unit.

All of our ignition upgrades and components can be found in our Ignition section of our eBay shop
